50. Crimes and Misdemeanors: You’ve Seen Too Many Movies (1989)

(Spoilers) In this final scene we see a reversal of Hollywood traditions. Woody Allen’s character doesn’t end up with the woman he desires, despite treating her well and showing her his passion and honesty. She instead goes with a more successful better looking man. The revelation comes as a punch in the stomach, for the audience as well as Allen’s character.

Martin Landau’s character on the other hand has gotten away with his murder completely. He is working with his guilt and moving on with his life with few consequences to his appalling actions.

The two characters sit and talk at a party. Landau explains that life doesn’t always work out like Hollywood movies.
